Muscat is a city steeped in Middle Eastern tradition. Unlike the gleaming towers of its neighbours, Muscat’s white-washed buildings feature arabesque domes and windows. Visit traditional palaces and mosques or head to nearby lagoons to spot turtles and dolphins.
Spend another day exploring this elegant city, wander about the bustling souks bartering for leather goods, ceramics or jewellery or explore Old Muscat through the eyes of ancient mariners aboard a traditional dhow boat. Back on land, enjoy a cardamom-infused coffee or try some of Muscat’s fresh seafood including tuna, kingfish and lobster.
With a day at sea, take the chance to relax by the pool with your favourite book, work up a sweat in the fitness centre or enjoy a bit of ‘me’ time with a treatment at the Sanctum Spa. At dinnertime, savour the delicious flavours of Italian cuisine in Aqualina or try a mouth-watering steak from Prime C. End the evening with entertainment in the Cabaret Lounge or the Living Room.
Bahrain may look like another shimmering Gulf state but it boasts a fascinating history and was the home of the ancient civilisation of the Dilmun. Before oil, Bahrain was famous for its pearls and you’ll still find them on sale in the busy souks, alongside exotic spices and exquisite carpets.
Qatar’s shining jewel, Doha blends traditional and modern with ease and confidence, from large shopping malls to the bustling alleys of Souq Waqif selling fragrant spices, perfume and ornate jewellery. Stroll around Doha Corniche, the waterfront promenade, or take a dhow cruise at sunset for spectacular city views.
Sir Bani Yas
This desert island combines stunning desert landscapes, incredible wildlife and a range of thrilling activities, including archery and snorkelling to horse riding and nature walks and drives. As a nature reserve, you’ll find giraffes, cheetahs and gazelles roaming free around the dunes. The island is dotted with archaeological sites and huge salt domes while the shores are lapped by the azure waters of the Gulf teeming with flying fish and sea turtles.
Its beaches of clean white sand are overlooked by modern skyscrapers but the capital of the Emirates also hides pockets of a more traditional culture, with souks and sheesha cafes and a bustling dhow harbour. Abu Dhabi boasts an impressive array of attractions from pristine beaches to wildlife reserves and theme parks.
You’ll stay overnight in port for another chance to explore Abu Dhabi. You could visit the beautiful white Sheikh Zayed Mosque, the largest mosque in the emirates; Ferrari World and exotic wildlife on Yas Island; or learn about the ancient sport of falconry at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital.
You’ll arrive back at the modern oasis in the desert: Dubai. Although Dubai glimmers with its glamorous skyline, boutiques and sun-soaked beaches; it is also a city rooted in tradition and history. This can be seen in the impeccable hospitality and courtesy that are extended to visitors, the many mosques dotted around the city and the call of prayer that fills the air.
